The constantly surging Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal has promoted the economic and cultural exchanges between the north region and the south region of China and has accumulated profound canal cultural heritages. Located at the highest point along the entire Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, Nanwang Town in Wenshang County is called the “Canal Ridge”, where canal shipping was often interrupted due to the insufficiency of water. The Nanwang Water Diversion Hub Project of “diverting water from Dawen River to replenish the canal” ensured the smooth flow of the Grand Canal for more than 500 years, which represented the highest achievement of civil engineering technology before the Industrial Revolution.

The Site Park is centered on the junction of the Dawen River and the Grand Canal as well as the Water Diversion Dragon King Temple. To the north, it reaches the Shili Sluice. To the south it reaches the Siqianpu Sluice. To the east, it reaches the Xujiankou Sluice Gate. The entire Site Park is comprised of seven world cultural heritage sites and two river course heritages on the Huitong River and the Xiaowen River.
